Hotel Rural Quinta de Bispos
Quinta de Bispos, is a "Hotel Rural" and a luxury tourist apartments complex in the Caramulo mountains of Central Portugal, with 31 four-star rooms, conference room, restaurant, swimming pools, and tennis court.
The hotel has received the European Ecolabel and the Green Key 2009 and 2010 and opened for the public at the end of 2008.

Reason for sale
We bought in 2005 a former orchard farm of almost 5 ha, beautifully located on the south slope of the Serra do Caramulo, called Quinta de Bispos. We transformed the existing buildings, together with some new construction, into a "Hotel Rural" and a luxury tourist apartments complex.
Quinta de Bispos now totals 31 rooms and was fully opened for the public at the end of 2008
We are a small family ran business with 20 years of expererience in rural tourism in Portugal and we like to retire.

Sustainability and technology
- All equipment is latest generation and, whenever possible, the choice was made to acquire sustainable and low energy equipment. In the construction of Quinta de Bispos the utmost care was taken in the selection of materials with the best heat (as well as sound) isolation properties.
- All windows have double glazing, and there are solar panels for generating hot water and electricity (104 square meter of photovoltaic solar modules, grid connected).
- Wherever possible, water based paint with the European ecological label was used.
- The swimming pools use the latest ionization techniques for disinfection, which minimizes the need for chlorine.
- The waters from the sewers are biodegradated in a special tank.
- All waste is separated, and organic waste is composted.
- Heating and dehumidification of the indoor swimming pool is done with heat pumps of the latest generation.
- Exhausted air is reutilized as a way to recover heat.
- Almost all lightbulbs used are energy-saving. The lights turn off automatically when a room is unoccupied.
- The aircondition turn off automatically when a window is opened.
All these and other measures resulted in the Quinta de Bispos receiving the following awards:
- The European Ecolabel (licence number PT/02/003). Quinta de Bispos is the third company in the tourism sector in Portugal that has received the European Eco-Label. The goal of the European Eco-Label is to help the European consumers choose high-quality ecological and environment-friendly products.
- The Green Key 2009 and 2010, a worldwide available eco-label awarded to leisure organisations such as hotels, conference- and holiday centres and leisure facilities. To obtain The Green Key a company has to fulfil a list of environmental requirements. These requirements are contained in a number of criteria. Besides environmental demands ( by example to control the production of waste and the use of water, electricity, etc.), the criteria include demands on policy, action plans, education and communication. Obtaining The Green Key shows the sense of responsibility a organisation has for its surroundings and society.
- Organic Farming Certification. The 5 ha of the quinta are officially classified by Sativa as fit for organic farming. The quinta produces all kind of organic citrus fruits, used for consumption by guests of the hotel or sold.
Press and guest comments
The fact that Quinta de Bispos was awarded European Ecolabel resulted in a lot of interest of the international press. TV stations in Holland, Belgium, England and Denmark have presented the Quinta in their programs.
In Portugal the RTP and the environmental organisation Quercus have broadcast a series of 8 programs called "Minuto Verde", which can be seen on the Portuguese version of the website of Quinta de Bispos and on YouTube. The quinta have been in several magazines in Portugal as well as in other countries.
